“Side Catch: Dolphin Meat" and “Plagues of Hot Weather"

Episode on March 11, 2010 Thursday Night, After Saksi “Side Catch: Dolphin Meat" and “Plagues of Hot Weather" Doc Ferds Recio goes to Davao to visit a site where dolphins are becoming regular victims of gill nets. These nets are used by small fishermen in their livelihood. But often, dolphins that chase after small fish inadvertently get caught in these nets. Some fishermen also mistake the dolphins as very large fish, and are unaware that they can still be saved by being released back into the water. Doc Ferds shares his dolphin-handling experience with the locals. Meanwhile, a bone collector who studies the remains of whales and dolphins believes that much can still be learned from these creatures even in death. He processes a large whale’s bones in hopes that the model may be used to educate more people about these giants of the sea. The heat is on. And while people are finding it increasingly difficult to adapt to the hot weather, some creatures are taking advantage of the heat to increase their numbers. In Oas, Albay, black bugs now plague farmers’ lands. And under the sea, crown of thorns which feed on corals are on the rise. Sa Davao, tinungo ni Doc Ferds ang lugar kung saan madalas raw nalalambat ang mga dolphin ng mga mangingisda. Dahil hindi makaalis sa mga lambat, nalulunod at namamatay ang mga dolphin. Kung minsan, ang mga dolphin ay napagkakamalang malalaking isda, at hindi na naibabalik sa dagat. Ibabahagi ni Doc Ferds ang kaniyang kaalaman tungkol sa dolphin-handling. Para naman sa isang bone collector, ang mga dolphin at balyena na hindi nakaliligtas ay maaari pa ring pag-aralan. Ang isa nga sa mga sinawing balyena, sinusubukang buuin muli ang mga buto para mailagay sa isang museo. Ngayong panahon ng tag-init habang ang lahat ay problemado dahil sa tagtuyot, may mga nilalang na namamayagpag ang lahi. Isa na rito ang mga black bug sa Oas, Albay na tinatarget ang mga palayan. Kaya habang ang mga magsasaka ay hirap para masigurong maganda ang kanilang ani, pinepeste naman ang kanilang pananim ng mga black bug. Pero hindi lang sila ang problema. Pagdating sa ilalim ng dagat, ang mga crown of thorns na pumapatay sa mga coral naman ang mabilis magparami habang mainit ang panahon. Ano ang misyon ni Kiko para masolusyunan ito?
